It is the largest school security department in the State of Kansas with 44 Officers responding to over 10,000 calls for assistance annually. Officers conduct investigations and maintain an extensive Security Services Incident Reporting System.

Officers attend required basic training, advanced training and annual in-service training. During the summer and fall of 2008, officers received over 136 hours of training opportunities, including training in: AED/CPR/1st Aid, Defensive Driving, Bomb Training, Active Shooter Training, Outreach Now and other trainings related to students and staff.

Officers enforce Wichita Public Schools board policies and are authorized to enforce applicable state and local laws in accordance with the State of Kansas Statute 72-8222 as supplemental law enforcement officers. This allows officers to possess and exercise all general law enforcement powers, rights and privileges in the State of Kansas.

The Security Services Department strives to be a professional part of the Wichita law enforcement community. Our services include patrolling the schools, crisis intervention, metal detection scanning, safety audits, investigations, surveillance and an extensive incident reporting system.

Officers are also responsible for providing security and metal detection scanning at all major athletic events.  On a typical weekday, Security Services officers are responsible for a population equal to that of a small-sized American city: nearly 58,000 individuals, counting students and staff.  Security Services Officers assist students, staff, parents and other visitors – all of whom expect and deserve a safe environment in which to learn and work.

This department is made up of two sections:

Security Patrol Officers: Patrol officers patrol buildings on foot and in vehicles. They respond to a wide variety of calls for service, which include, assistance with disruptive students; theft reporting; reports of suspicious activities and individuals; as well as, alarms that are received through our Security Communications Department and Sedgwick County 911 Emergency Communications.

Security Site Based Officers: Site based officers are responsible for the security in seven comprehensive high schools, four special day schools and one magnet high school serving over 10,000 students.  Security officers receive specialized training in such areas as first aid, report writing, conflict resolution, diversity and other issues related to security and protection.
